May 1997. Excavation.
Work completed in advance of gravel extraction.
Two parallel linear features running approximately north-south were identified as post medieval ditches. Other features included a posthole and pits containing flints, charcoal and Iron Age or Early Saxon pottery sherds.
The results of the excavation did not meet the expectations raised by the field survey. It appears that most of the archaeological features suggested by artefact scatters have been eroded by later agricultural activity.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
A. Cattermole (NLA), 9 January 2008.

June 1997. Watching brief and Field Survey
Fieldwalking and metal-detecting of topsoil stripping on site of processing site followed by excavation of exposed features. Several pits were recorded, one of which contained Roman pottery.
Worked flints were also recovered, including a Neolithic part polished axe.
See report (S5) for further details.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 1 April 2015.
