Summary

An earthwork rectangular enclosure is probably the remains of a medieval toft, and fragments of medieval pottery have been found during field walking. A small medieval settlement on this site is mentioned in documents dating from the 15th century.

December 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Earthwork ditches which may correspond with the enclosure discussed above (see above) are seen on aerial photographs and on recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S3-S4). The enclosure is recorded on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6" map (S5) and Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25" map (S6). The feature may relate to a field or an area of woodland. The enclosure most likely dates to the post medieval period. However, a medieval origin for the enclosure cannot be ruled out. As the feature is recorded in good detail on the readily accessible historic maps (S5-S6), it has not been mapped as part of this project.
