Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of boundaries and drainage ditches dating from the Roman to post medieval periods, are visible on aerial photographs to the southwest of Mill House Farm, North Elmham. The proximity of the site to the River Wensum and the Black Water channel would also indicate that some of the linear features mapped could relate to drainage ditches of post medieval or modern date.

The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of boundaries and drainage ditches dating from the Roman to post medieval periods, are visible on aerial photographs to the southwest of Mill House Farm, North Elmham (S1). The site is centred on TG 0007 2025. A Roman date for these cropmarks could be suggested due to the site’s close proximity to the Roman town of Billingford (NHER 7206). Although there is no obvious link between the two areas of cropmarks. However some of the ditches do follow a broadly similar alignment to those associated with the town. Material dating to the Roman, Saxon and medieval periods has been found within the vicinity of the site and therefore a post-Roman date is possible for some or all of the features mapped. The proximity of the site to the River Wensum and the Black Water channel would also indicate that some of the linear features mapped could relate to drainage ditches of post medieval or modern date.
S. Massey (NMP), 20 February 2008.
