NHER 30320 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Undated and post medieval cropmarks

This is a very odd feature as it appears to be shaped like a question mark, part of the 'bend' not being visible because of differential cropping. Is it really a trackway?

Exceptionally clear cropmarks of two rectangular enclosures, with rounded 'playing card' corners. Both have roughly eastern entrance features. The westerly example is the more complete and well defined of the two. These are likely to be Roman in date, and represent temporary encampments, with the western one being more substantial, or later in sequence.
Also visible is a large curvilinear ditched enclosure, only part of which can be traced. This is likely to be a late prehistoric enclosure.
Also traversing the site are two parallel linears, which may define a broad trackway or road.

As part of the NMP, the cropmarks described above are now recorded as several different sites. Record NHER 30320 now refers to the rather disparate cropmarks surrounding three more coherent sites (NHER 45242, 45243 and 45244).

The track adjacent to Grange Farm is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3) and consequently has not been mapped by the NMP. The ‘rectangular enclosures’ have been recorded as a possible Roman camp or fortlet (NHER 45242) and Roman practice camp (NHER 45243). Fragments of a possible prehistoric field system have also been mapped (NHER 45244). The postulated prehistoric curvilinear enclosure corresponds with a field boundary depicted on East Ruston Enclosure and Tithe maps (S4)-(S5). The broad trackway or road is also of post medieval date, as at least one side of it corresponds with another field boundary depicted on these maps.

The mapped cropmarks comprise undated features and those that correspond with features on the Tithe and Enclosure maps, but not those shown on later Ordnance Survey maps (such as (S3)). They are visible on a variety of aerial photographs: (S1)-(S2) and (S6). It should be noted that due to an inadequate number of control points, rectification of the aerial photographs was poor, and this may have had a detrimental effect on the accuracy of the mapping.
