Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1993 and 2025 recovered undatable prehistoric flint flakes and a scraper; a Neolithic/Bronze Age flint knife and retouched flake; Roman, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; an undatable lava quern fragment; Roman and post-medieval coins and a number of other, medieval to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a medieval buckle and thimble; a medieval/post-medieval mount or stud and copper alloy cauldron fragment and a post-medieval buckle and lead cloth seal.

1993. TG 017 377, approximate location. Thorntons.
Small incomplete flint flake with extensive steep retouch on both lateral edges. Distal end missing. Minor recent damage on ventral face.

1996. At TG 0163 3766. Casual fieldwalking find.
Rim sherd of late medieval/early post medieval bronze cauldron with bronze repair sheet folded over top and closely fitted, held in place by two bronze rivets.

Whole field, up to 1996, casual pottery finds.
Six Roman grey ware sherds.
Twelve medieval unglazed sherds.
Seven Glazed Grimston sherds.
Two post medieval sherds.

2000. Fieldwalking.
Identified by P. A. Robins (NCM).
Neolithic/Bronze Age flint knife; broad blade-like flake with steep blunt break on right edge. Left edge has some shallow retouch, extending round to distal tip, and is worn.

May 2001. Surface finds. On headland to north of cottage:
Fragment of lava quern, probably upper stone, diameter about 450mm.
Two undatable prehistoric retouched flint flakes:
A) broad side struck flake of glossy mottled grey flint, with steep fine retouch along part of the distal edge, some edge damage elsewhere. Found nearest the Bale Drift.
B) long narrow primary flake of black flint with edge damage and some probable minor retouch. In third of field nearest to Bale Drift.

November 2001 and March 2002. Surface finds.
Found at back of Thorntons near drift. Scraper: Oblique scraper edge on secondary flake, right hand side. Undatable prehistoric.
Found beside drift towards cottage. Retouched flake: Pointed distal end of flake, snapped transversely, fine inverse retouch on left edge, some retouch or edge damage on the right. Undatable prehistoric.
