Summary

A metal detectorist has found a 14th century seal matrix. The seal features two figures, with one kneeling and one standing. The standing figure holds a grid-iron, suggesting he is St Lawrence with his instrument of martyrdom. This identification is confirmed by the legend which refers to LAVRENCII. The kneeling figure may be the owner of the seal.

Map

Metal detecting.
Very fine condition 14th century seal matrix, faceted handle with trefoil suspension loop. Punched dot to orientate seal correctly. Legend: * Sv LAVRENCII DE STOWE v. In centre, a kneeling figure (right) and a standing figure holding a grid-iron, St Lawrence, with his instrument of martyrdom. The kneeling figure could well represent the owner of the seal.
