Full Description
17 August 1981. Ordnance Survey air photography.
Cropmarks noted by B.Cushion (NLA) and shown to E.Rose (NLA), May 1994.
Apparent circular ditched enclosure. It is quite possible this is a recent feature or possibly the boundary of a knoll behind the sand dunes; but it fits within the northern projection of the field, which is at least a century old (the adjacent sewage works was constructed within the next field boundary) yet the area of the circle is divided
into two fields on the county series 25 inch map.
Photocopy in file.
B. Cushion and E. Rose (NLA), 1 June 1994.
THE CENTRAL POINT FOR THIS SITE HAS BEEN ALTERED FROM TG 4305 2728 TO TG 4306 2723.
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A possible circular enclosure of unknown date and uncertain archaeological origin is visible on aerial photographs at the coast at Sea Palling (S1). The site is centred on TG 4306 2723. This circular ditch appears to be surrounded by a lighter material, which gives the impression that this ‘enclosure’ is actually the edge of a natural knoll, possibly surrounded differential geology. Other geological cropmarks are visible within the field. However due to the almost perfectly circular nature of cropmarks, a possibility remains that this site is archaeological. The ditch is up to 5.5m wide and has an internal diameter of up to 97m .It is also worth noting that the path to the north, which led to the lifeboat station, was once much more curvilinear in it’s course, than is indicated by the modern route. The path shown on the 1839 Palling Tithe map (S2) and the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S3) follows the same curving line as the possible enclosure. This could indicate a post medieval date. However, as stated above, if the enclosure is archaeological its location has already been enclosed into two fields by 1839.
S. Massey (NMP), 28 September 2005.
