Summary

A possible enclosure of unknown date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Its date is uncertain, as it is mirrored by the field pattern depicted on historic Ordnance Survey maps. It might represent a relatively early enclosure, perhaps a medieval stock enclosure, for example, which has been surrounded by post medieval field boundaries. Alternatively, it might be contemporary or later than the field pattern, perhaps representing an agricultural feature of relatively recent origin.

Map

22 June 1981. OS aerial photography.
Cropmarks noted by B.Cushion (NLA) and shown to E. Rose May 1994.
Ploughed out rectangular earthwork enclosure. This may simply be old removed field boundaries, but no such boundaries are shown on the 1906 map (S1), and there are no adjacent visible marks of similar fields.
B. Cushion (NLA), and E. Rose (NLA), 1 June 1994.

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 424 199 to TG 4240 1996.

The possible enclosure described above is visible as cropmarks (and/or possibly soilmarks) on aerial photographs (S2). It is surrounded and mirrored by the pattern of enclosure shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3). This, together with the general appearance of the marks, may reflect a relatively recent and mundane origin, perhaps simply reflecting late post medieval and modern agricultural practices. Alternatively, it could be an early enclosure, perhaps a stock enclosure dating to the medieval period for example, which has been surrounded by later field boundaries. There is no evidence of any relationship with the undated cropmarks visible 100m to its north (NHER 43718).

The precise form and size of the enclosure is difficult to gauge, as its west and east sides are aligned with the modern tramlines. It appears to be broadly rectangular in shape, measuring 90m long and up to 78m wide. It is defined by a substantial bank, possibly with a double bank on its west side. The apparent ‘entrance’ at its northeast corner may simply reflect the way the feature is showing in that year’s crop. A possible ditch outside the southeast corner is probably a contemporary feature.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 30 October 2006.
