Full Description
31 July 1990. Ordnance Survey air photography.
Cropmarks noted by B. Cushion (NLA) and shown to E. Rose (NLA), May 1994.
Various linear marks crossing each other at right angles.
Photocopy of (S1) in file.
E. Rose (NLA) and B Cushion (NLA), 1 June 1994.
October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Some of the cropmarks described above are now recorded as part of a more extensive, multi-period site NHER 45072. NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 402 190 to TG 4039 1906.
The principal element of the cropmarks described above is an enclosure. This is visible on aerial photographs (S2), centred at TG 4038 1908. Its date and function are unknown. Some of the irregularities in its plan may merely reflect the difficulty of distinguishing between archaeological and non-archaeological cropmarks on the consulted aerial photographs. A possible trackway 30m to the south, which shares the enclosure’s orientation, could be a contemporary feature. A second trackway visible 200m to the northeast (part of NHER 45072), which shares this alignment as well, could also date to this phase of activity.
The enclosure is roughly rectilinear in plan. It seems to be defined by a double ditch for at least part of its circuit. It measures 73.5m long and 61.5m wide. There are no clear entrances.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 11 October 2006.
