Summary

Abbotsford is a house of around 1830, built of brick with a slate roof. This two storey building is divided into three bays, and has a Tuscan style porch. Inside there is floral plasterwork and a room arranged in imitation of a medieval hall and solar. It is thought that this house was inspired by Sir Walter Scott's mansion at Abbotsford, which is in the same style. The stable block (NHER 45886) is of a similar date, and the east wall of this contains a number of reused sections of medieval limestone blocks, no doubt from the abbey.
