Summary

This timber framed house has medieval and post medieval elements. It was built in around 1500, possibly with a screens passage plan. A chimney and north bay were added about 1700, and it was altered during the 19th century and restored in the 1990s. There are apotropaic symbols on the chimney and a 'fives ball' has been found inside it.

Map

Formerly No. 10, Bentley Road and also Little Thatched Cottage.
Very fine, but derelict, building. Timber framed of about 1500 with unglazed windows, original upper floor, possibly screens passage plan. Some external pargetting, resembles 17th century work. Inserted stack probably of about 1700 still with apotropaisms. Additional north bay perhaps also about 1700, or earlier. Altered in 19th century. To be restored.
Early 'fives ball' found in stack.
See report (S1) in file.

2009. Building survey. Property now known as 'Kettleton'.
One-and-a-half storey house, plaster- rendered exterior and a reed-thatched roof. The house comprises five timber- framed bays, with the most southerly being the earliest phase of construction. Former hall windows and the lack of a partition below the service chamber tie beam indicates the former existence of a medieval open hall.
