Map

August 1994. Flanders, High Street. Observation on building site following owner's reporting.
Beneath western wall foundation of former open-side building - north to south wall of thinnish ?17th century bricks (sandy red 'post medieval' colour) laid as stretchers, visible from 0.28m to 1.20m below ground level. Builders had observed it to about -2.4m. Wall not trench built, but formerly upstanding with good pointing. Thickness of wall not observable. Butted on west by layer of brown, in situ, slightly laminated silt. Builders observed similar deposit to about -2.4m. (They also report that north wall of house to south has very deep footings, unusual in the area).
Is this a former quay wall?
