NHER 30996 (Monument record) - Deserted medieval and post-medieval settlement

January 1995. Earthwork Survey.
A series of ditched and banked sub rectangular enclosures with ponds and possible platforms, bounded by probable enclosure period field boundaries.
Some obvious drainage features. The whole adjacent to natural irregularities of Walton Common.
Pottery:
1) Grid reference [1]. West side of drain, largish sherd of non Grimston jug base, slightly micaceous fabric, glazed.
2) Grid reference [2]. Unglazed Grimston body sherd.
3) Grid reference [3]. Unglazed medieval body sherd.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA). Sherds donated to Norwich Castle Museum.
Limestone: spoil from ditch cleaning [4]. See sketch in file.
Medieval and post medieval brick, plus post medieval refuse also from ditch cleaning in vicinity.

November 2005.
Site of possible manor house located in eastern half of site, with possible garden features. To the west of the possible garden area is a series of low platforms and ridges which are considered to mark the sites of buildings. To the west of this land that was probably orginally part of the common.
On the tithe map (S3) a field at the eastern end of the site, containing the probable remains of the manor house, is named as Waltons. Towards the end of the 14th century one of the manors of East Walton, known as Stranges after the Le Strange family who held it in the 13th century, was conveyed to William Walton of East Walton. It was sometimes referred to thereafter as Waltons Manor.
