Summary

A medieval ditch was observed in a water pipe trench in 1994. The ditch may represent the edge of the medieval common. This was the site of a substantial house in the late 16th and 17th centuries, which is described in probate inventories. Medieval and post medieval pottery has been found during field walking.

19th century farmhouse on south edge of plot which is mostly grass and horse exercise area (latter covered with imported sand). Certainly on medieval/post medieval freehold tenement site.
20cm wide/30cm deep trench from TF 91776 12366 to 91794 12366 showing ?common edge ditch.
2 medieval and 1 post medieval sherd from spoil.
Natural clay in west part.

(S2) notes that this was the site of a substantial house in the 16th century, although the evidence for a medieval settlement on the site is confused. A late 17th century probate inventory records a large house, with a porch chamber, gallery chamber, a hall and hall chamber, a parlour and parlour chamber, as well as a barn, a dairy and a buttery.
