Summary

The earthworks and cropmarks of two ditched enclosures, probably a medieval moat, are visible on the ground and on aerial photographs. Another rectangular enclosure is probably a fishpond. Fragments of medieval pottery and roof tile have been found on the site.

1946. RAF air photograph.
2 interlocking ditched enclosures indicative of moated site, north west of Old Hall Farm.

1971. Ordnance Survey air photograph.
Less defined but still evident. Also rectangular enclosure to east with oval central area.

1995.
Ground visit noted new ditch through centre of complex. Moated area ploughed, with re-seeded grass to south and arable to north. Plentiful medieval pottery and some roof tile noted on area after 40 minutes in area of approx. 90m x 30m. Rectangular area to east is probable fishpond, approximately 70m north to south by 30m east to west with central oval mound, and probable leat for southeast corner, now degraded. Ditch and resultant spoil has cut this into two sections, the northern, smaller one with water. Moat and possible earlier site of hall?

1 large base unglazed Grimston.
1 jug rim Glazed Grimston.
1 strap handle rim Glazed Grimston.
7 body sherds including 1 rouletted.
5 medieval unglazed jar rims.
1 medieval unglazed bowl rim.
64 medieval unglazed body sherds.
1 large, very coarse damaged medieval unglazed bowl/pancheon rim.
1 Stamford Ware (Medieval 13th century) (probably developed) body sherd.
Several fresh sherds.
