NHER 31197 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Earthwork sections of probable Roman road

1995.
Approximately 140m of north to south low (0.2m) causeway with flanking ditches (0.1m) for approximately 40m of central length ridge 4m wide with 2.2m on either side to outer edge of ditch. Possible line of Roman Road NHER 3697 which presently 'ends' approximately 600m to south, although orientation not exact.

Sections of probable Roman road (see above) are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and on visualised lidar data (S2-S3). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features still survive as earthworks. The features most likely form part of the Roman road recorded more broadly as NHER 3697. The northern section of probable Roman road appears to be overlain by the earthworks of a ring ditch and mound (centred at approximately TF 8660 1266) of an unknown, but possible post medieval to modern date (NHER 67640).
