Summary

Cropmarks of a series of connected linear features are visible on NLA oblique aerial photography from 1990. The origin and date of these features is uncertain, however they seem to form a series of enclosures linked by a main north to south linear. It is possible that this is some form of field system.

Cropmarks of a series of connected linear features are visible on NLA oblique aerial photography from 1990 (S1), and have been mapped. These features consist of a main linear running approximately north-south from TF7003 4048 to TF7003 4037, with several east-west linears coming off its eastern side. The length of the east-west linears ranges from 20 to 50m. The three more southerly of these linears are slightly clearer/wider than the others. Two to three additional linears aligned north to south are located between TF7009 4042 and TF7008 4037. They are about 60m to the east of the first linear (the longest of these is about 45m in length, the shortest about 20m). There is what appears to be an additional section of the first north-south linear extending between TF7003 4051 and TF7003 4052. There is also the possibility that there are further short linears at right angles to the main north-south linear, but these were fairly indistinct on the aerial photographs, and so have not been mapped. These features seem to form a series of enclosures (some of which are clearer/more defined than others) linked by the main north-south linear/axis. It is possible that this is some form of field system.
In addition to these, towards the south of the cropmarks a curved ditch (almost the shape of a horse-shoe) is visible. It is located at TF7004 4038 and is about 5m across. Nearby, at TF7005 4038, there is a short length of ditch (approximately 7-8m in length) that is slightly wider than the rest.
The origin and date of these features are uncertain.
H. Clare (NMP) 24 April 2003.
