A World War Two type 22 pillbox is visible on aerial photographs on the south eastern extent of Howards Hill, Cromer (S1). The pillbox is centred on TG 2104 4205 and forms part of larger area of World War Two defences and military training features on Howards Hill (NHER 38910), which includes a variety of slit trenches, barbed wire obstructions and two additional pillboxes (NHER 32574 to 5).
The pillbox is not clearly visible on the wartime aerial photographs due to tree and vegetation cover. The pillbox is visible in April 1959 due to the trees being bare. Also visible at this time are two additional structures to the immediate east. It is not clear whether these are also military as they are on the opposite side of the boundary to the military site and they may relate to the allotments to the east.
S. Massey (NMP), 25 October 2004.
