Full Description
12 September 1995. Site visit.
Large, near rectangular area of marsh, shonw on current and county series Ordnance Survey maps, around 210m x 30m, appears to be the subdued remnant of a pond or lake shown on (S1) or presumably associated with Warham Hall. At south end of Church Wood.
At present the site is a shallow 0.5m depression with brick revetting at east end, up to 1m high of post medieval brick.
B. Cushion (NLA) September 1995.
2000. Field Observation and Desk-based Assessment.
Site visited and considered as part of archaeological assessment of Holkham Estate.
In valley bottom, an area of rough grazing. The former ponds are filled, with their outlines only surviving, as drains.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 April 2015.
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A large, roughly rectangular shallow depression can be seen on NLA aerial photographs from 1974 (S3), 1977 (S4) and 1998 (S5) and on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S6). It measures approximately 205m x 20m (running from TF9426 4134 to TF9441 4148). It is likely to be the remains of a post medieval pond. Its location appears to coincide with the pond or lake shown on Biederman’s map of 1789 (S1). It is located beyond the south end of a field that used to contain Church Wood and was presumably associated with Warham Old Hall (NHER 1843).
H. Clare (NMP), 30 April 2003.
