Full Description
1970. Ordnance Survey air photograph.
Incomplete enclosures as narrow crop marks, with one possible double feature (causewayed track?).
Sketch plotted at 1:2500 in file.
B.Cushion (NLA), October 1995.
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A group of cropmark rectilinear enclosures are visible on Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1970 (S1). The date of these enclosures is not known, although the regularity of the ditches may indicate a late date, possibly medieval. They may relate to fields and enclosure associated with Hales Manor (NHER 1886) to the immediate south. However it is also possible that the site could also be much earlier, potentially Roman in date.
The features are showing in a staggered and interrupted cropmark, which is perhaps caused by agricultural activity in the field. The main element of the site appears to be two conjoined enclosures. The western enclosure is rectangular and centred on TF 9581 4180 and is 66m by 38.5m. To the east is a less complete enclosure, which appears to be trapezoidal in shape. This would potentially have been 98m long and at least 70m wide and centred on TF 9588 4179, however only the western and southern side are clearly visible. The southern ditch has a double ditched appearance from TF 9582 4176 to TF 9588 4174. This is likely to have been a trackway running alongside the enclosure.
Two parallel ditches, 30m apart, meet the western enclosure at a perpendicular angle. The longest of these is 106m and runs from TF 9569 4184 to TF 9579 4180 and the northern ditch runs from TF 9574 4185 to TF 9579 4184. Several other ditched features are apparent surrounding the enclosure, although these are all quite fragmentary. To the east of the site is a right-angled ditch, running from TF 9606 4178 to TF 9606 4171for 67.5m and continuing to TF 9609 4170 for 34.5m. This has a small stretch of ditch conjoined to the west.
