Summary

A possible hollow way or substantial boundary, and some possibly contemporary field boundaries and/or trackways, all of unknown date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Alignments with elements of the modern landscape suggest that a post-Roman date is probable.

The NLA oblique aerial photographs of the site described above were mislocated. As a consequence NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 3175 2343 to TG 3256 2277. It has also led to the re-accessioning of the photographs (S1) to (S5).

The features described above, together with others further to the north, are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S2)-(S5), covering a roughly L-shaped area of land between TG 3236 2302 and TG 3279 2259. A sinuous embanked ditch visible in the northern part of the site could represent a hollow way or a substantial boundary. The ditches to its south, which may define trackways and field boundaries, seem to be contemporary. Their alignment with the extant trackway Dark Lane, 250m to the east, suggests a post-Roman date for the cropmarks. An apparent continuation, however, of orientations and aligments from the Iron Age/Roman period into the medieval and post medieval period is evident at more extensive cropmark sites visible nearby (e.g. NHER 36748 1km to the southwest) and an earlier origin cannot be ruled out. An association with a sinuous road and a number of buildings depicted at this approximate location on Faden’s Map of Norfolk (S6) is also possible.
