Summary

Metal detecting in 1995 to 2016 recovered Iron Age, Roman and medieval coins; as well as Roman to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Roman brooch and toilet article; an Early Saxon girdle hanger and three-dimensional anthromorphic figurine; a Middle Saxon strap fitting and a pin; a Late Saxon strap fitting; medieval strap fittings, a buckle, scabbard fragment and key; and a post-medieval sword belt fitting.

2005. Thematic Research.
This site formed part of case study area for a research paper on the value of metal-detected finds in archaeological research, particularly within landscape studies and identification of previously unknown cemetery sites. The case study area included NHER 25458, NHER 28671, NHER 31759, NHER 34131, NHER 34355, and NHER 34965.

January-December 2016. Metal-detecting. [3].
Early Saxon figurine with silver wire possible suspension ring fragment (S3). The figurine is a copper alloy three-dimensional man wearing a cap or helmet with hands above his groin. These figures have been interperted as amuletic in function with possible links to pre-Christian deities. A growing corpus of this artefact type exists across East Anglia, with this figurine being heavily related to an example from Carlton Coleville, Suffolk.
The figurine was declared Treasure by association with the attached silver suspension ring fragment at inquest (Ref: 2018T183). See Unpublished Report (S4). It was subsequently acquired by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.142).
