Summary

Observation of service trenches in 1996 noted two undated ditches and a wall. A drainage trench and associated inspection pits excavated in 2024 revealed a linear feature at the western edge of the field. This was probably associated with the medieval hollow way previously recorded to the south (NHER 39453). No human remains were encountered, with the absence of graves suggesting the churchyard of St Mary’s Church (NHER 1119) is unlikely to have ever extended to the east of its present boundary. Unstratified finds a Roman tile fragment, a piece of medieval roof tile and a post-medieval pottery sherd.

Monitoring of drainage works to north of St Mary’s Church (NHER 1119), which continued into this field. A single 0.6m deep drainage ditch was excavated at this location (Church Field), running close to and roughly parallel with its northern boundary of the field. Four deeper inspection pits were also excavated at intervals along its line.
The westernmost inspection pit exposed part of a north-to-south aligned linear feature thought to be related to the medieval hollow way previously recorded to the south (NHER 39453). The fill of this feature contained chalky inclusions and was overlain by a subsoil deposit containing fragments and flecks of ceramic building material.
The three other inspection pits and the drainage trench itself revealed no additional archaeologically-significant remains. A deposit containing brick and other material of likely late post-medieval to modern date was though noted in the vicinity of the eastern boundary of the field.
The small number of unstratified finds recovered at this location included a Roman tile fragment, a piece of medieval roof tile and a post-medieval pottery sherd.
