Summary

A map of 1559 shows that a windmill once stood at this location, possibly from as early as the 14th century. The same windmill appears on an early 17th century map adjacent to 'Lyhowe gate', the present day northeast to southwest road.

Site of windmill.

Shown on map of 1559 (NRO Raynham Box 20) and may have been there as early as 14th century. This is presumably the 'mill near the fort recorded in reference (S1).

Early 17th century map (information from member of the public [2]) shows windmill to south of fort in northeast corner of 2.5 acres held by John Chapman adjacent to 'Lyhowe gate', the present day northeast to southwest road.
