Summary

An undated mound has been identified in this field. Although originally thought to be artificial (possibly representing the remains of either a barrow or a mill mound), trial trenching in 2017 suggested that it was most likely natural in origin.

Map

Apparent 'mound' with flattened top at top of slope rising to north. First reported by [1]. ?Circular, maximum diameter about 25m. Cut away by track to west and field to north and drops sharply. Located in what is a somewhat irregular and hummocky landscape with other rises close by. Field formerly rough grass and heavily grazed and some rabbit activity but no surface finds. The apparent regular shape and location of 'mound' at crest of rise may suggest it is artificial. Whether this indicates it is a barrow or mill mound or whatever is open to question.

June 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
A slot excavated across this mound suggested that this was most likely a natural feature. Although it was comprised of a clayey sand that appeared 'mixed' in nature there was nothing to suggest that it was other than naturally deposited material.
See NHER 64347 for further details.
