Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 1997 and 2007 has revealed some limited evidence for past activity. Two undated, but possibly prehistoric hearths were discovered during pipeline laying in 1997. A watching brief maintained during the installation of an electrical cable in 2001 recorded a concentration of burnt flint that potentially represented the remains of a prehistoric 'burnt mount' (an accumulation of material that had been used to heat or boil water). Subsequent groundworks in 2007 revealed three undated pits containing charcoal-rich deposits.

July 2006. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed route of Witton to North Walsham Anglian Water pipeline.

January-February 2007. Strip Map and Sample Excavation and Watching Brief.
Fieldwork along route of pipeline (Area A):
Three shallow features which were almost certainly pits were observed during the watching brief. All three pits contain charcoal-rich deposits and appear to have been deliberately backfilled. All three pits remain undated, but may be broadly contemporary.
See final report (S6) and assessment report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.115).
These features were previously recorded under NHER 52898.
A. Cattermole (NLA), 6 July 2009. Amended by H. Hamilton (HES), 7 May 2019 and P. Watkins (HES), 18 May 2019.
