Full Description
1997. Ditches, banks and scarps forming a series of field boundaries mostly seen on Enclosure Award map of 1806, although thought to pre-date it. One possible toft to north-west of existing cottage, or possibly an extension of its garden. The northern boundary feature is probable common edge.
Earthwork survey to follow.
B. Cushion (NLA), January 1997.
February 1997. Earthwork Survey.
Survey at 1:1000.
Two medieval unglazed sandy sherds. Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA).
See report (S1) for further details and copy of plan (S8). This survey is also noted in (S9).
B. Cushion (NLA), April 1997. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 April 2015.
Under excellent grassland, with one or two old parkland trees. Unploughed in living memory.
H. Paterson (A&E), 16 December 1998.
May 2011. Norfolk NMP.
The enclosures and possible toft described above, which are presumed to be of post medieval or earlier date, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, centred at TG 1314 0138. Photographs (S2)-(S4) show them most clearly, and their plan has also been captured by an Environment Agency Lidar survey (S5). Although the photographs and Lidar are useful for the purposes of comparison, they add little to the known plan and interpretation of the site, as recorded by the earthwork survey and report described above (S1). They have not been mapped therefore by the NMP, although the monument polygon defining the limits of the site has been adjusted to more closely reflect the extent of the features.
It is also worth noting that one of the enclosures along the eastern side of the site (centred at TG 1320 0132) corresponds with the western end of a field shown on the Tithe Map (S6) which extends east of the modern boundary that truncates the enclosures into the adjacent field, where it is visible as soilmarks on aerial photographs (S7). This perhaps gives some indication as to the original size and shape of the enclosures, at least in the later post medieval period. Earthworks visible on the same aerial photographs in the next adjacent field to the east (centred at TG 1354 0134) appear to relate to drainage. Neither these nor the soilmarks have been mapped.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 11 May 2011.
