Full Description
1996. Metal detector finds. [1].
Knife handle, cast bronze in form of a lion, 17th century.
Bronze object with white metal coating. Main component is a lozenge-shaped hollow box, bearing design of central lozenge with grooved cross and punched triangular decoration, surrounded by square raised area, with two diagonal grooves filling the corners of the box. One corner of the lozenge projects to become an animal head with upturned snout forming one side of a squarish loop. On the back is a single flat plate covering box and projection, with circular aperture opposite the centre of the box and triangular aperture by the corner furthest from the animal head. The apertures perhaps allowed the object to be used as the catchplate for a hook-and-eye fastening, for comparison see (S1) medieval.
