Full Description
Very rare heavy machine gun emplacement (type 2) built 1940. Has no roof; obviously never completed.
See (S1).
D.Walker (NLA), July 1996.
Centre of site altered from TG 1025 4377 to TG 1022 4380, as the grid reference given did not seem to correspond to the location of the structure indicated on (S1) and the position indicated by the aerial photographs.
May 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two structure, probably a type 2 heavy gun emplacement, is located within the Weybourne Anti-Aircraft Training Camp (NHER 11335) and is visible on aerial photographs (S2-3). The structure is centred on TG 1022 4380. The site is visible in 1940 and in 1941 a section of slit trench has been constructed to the south of emplacement, recorded under NHER 11335. The pillbox appears to be 6m by 4m in shape, although it is possible that parts of the structure are not visible from the air, as on the 1946 aerial photographs the structure is not clear. It is possible that it was camouflaged in 1946 (S4) or ,as suggested above, not completed and without a roof. However the structure would appear to have a roof in 1940, so perhaps it was damaged during the war and training exercises.
S. Massey (NMP), 21 May 2004.
May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 13), Context 201:
A scatter of reinforced concrete fragments and sections of brick wall were found on the cliff face and top. Between TG 10142 43848 and TG 10209 43826, they were remains of a Second World War structure. May be from NHER 11335, NHER 24264 or NHER 32500. See NHER 41572.
See assessment report (S5) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
J. Allen (NLA), 22 April 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 July 2019.
