Summary

About twenty World War Two anti tank cubes at Sheringham station car park are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1952. By 1989 only seven or eight remained, the rest having been removed. Evidence for four possible road blocks at the adjacent crossroads is also visible on the 1946 aerial photographs. The position of these and other nearby roadblocks suggests that they were used in Home Guard training exercises rather than being defensive measures alone.

A series of about twenty World War Two anti tank cubes/blocks are clearly visible on RAF 1946 (S2) and 1952 (S3) aerial photographs. These run between TG 1576 4300 and TG 1570 4299. They are located in the station car park in Sheringham and a second group of anti tank cubes is visible to the west, just beyond the railway bridge (NHER 28241). However only seven or eight of these cubes remain in the station car park by 1989 (S4). There also appears to be a structure/building in amongst the cubes. It is not clear how this is related to the tank trap; whether it was already there and the anti tank cubes added around it, or whether it is a later addition.
Also visible on the 1946 aerial photographs (S1) is the possible remains of four road blocks covering each section of the crossroads. None of the original structure of these defences remains by 1946 and all that is visible are a series of parallel scars and worn lines and markings across the roads. The remains of other roadblocks are visible to the west and south (NHER 28241 and 38525). The positioning of these roadblocks would suggest that these are the remains of Home Guard training exercises, rather than strictly defensive measures.
H. Clare (NMP) and S. Massey (NMP), 23 March 2004.
