A World War Two home guard shelter is visible on aerial photographs on the edge of the Meadow to the north of Cromer Hall (S2). This structure, which is rectangular and measures 6m by 5m, sits on the edge of an area of World War Two defences and structures, possibly relating to a military encampment (NHER 38816). To the north is a type 22 pillbox (NHER 32570) and to the immediate west is a searchlight battery (NHER 34406). It is not clear when this structure was constructed, it certainly does not appear to be visible in 1940 or 1941 (S3 and S4). The structure is also not obvious in 1942 (S5), although the aerial photographs are not particularly clear so its absence at this date is not conclusive.
S. Massey (NMP), 28 September 2004.
