A rare World War Two L shaped pillbox is visible on aerial photographs on the centre of Howards Hill, Cromer (S2 and S3). The pillbox is centred on TG 2093 4209 and forms part of larger area of World War Two defences and military training features on Howards Hill (NHER 38910), which includes a variety of slit trenches, barbed wire obstructions and two additional pillboxes (NHER 31542 and 32575). A slit trench runs up towards this pillbox from a pair of gun emplacements to the south see NHER 38910 for details. There is no definite sign of this large pillbox on an oblique aerial photograph covering the site taken in October 1940 (S4), however it is possible that it was camouflaged as the aerial photograph is quite oblique and taken from some distance away. However it is possible that it was constructed in-between October 1940 and August 1941 (S2).
S. Massey (NMP), 25 October 2004.
