Full Description
Early March 1997. Metal detecting.
Hoard in ploughsoil, around 414 Roman coins, 3rd century radiates.
Details to follow. Further fieldwork to be undertaken.

Excavation of main area of scattered hoard.
Machining down to natural in spits produced around 500 more coins (including finds from spoil heap). No hoard context found. All coins in topsoil. (S1) in file of recorded coin find spots shows a diffuse 'epicentre'. Hoard disturbed and scattered some time ago. Sub-soiler marks, closely spaced, visible in surface of natural, running east to west.

Pottery: one Roman greyware body sherd, one medieval glazed body sherd, one medieval unglazed body sherd.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA).
Part of Roman rosette brooch. Narrow vertically fluted bow (fragment) cast-in-one with foot which has concentrically ridged decoration on front and remains of catchplate on reverse. 1st century AD.

Medieval copper alloy buckle frame. Oval, with missing bar. Outer edge swells slightly and is decorated with ribbing. Traces of gilding.
