Summary

A World War Two Type 24 pillbox survives on land at what is now Yarmouth Business Park, Southtown. It was visited on the ground in 1995, and is also visible as a structure on aerial photographs taken from 1944 onwards. On the earliest of these it was camouflaged as a shed. It was one element in a line of anti invasion defences sited to protect the landward side of Great Yarmouth. Anti tank obstacles and possibly another pillbox continue the line 185m to the southeast (NHER 43304); a further pillbox stands 365m to the northwest (NHER 32652). Like several of the other defences identified in the area, the pillbox described here occupied a strategic position on a bank between a parallel arrangement of pre-existing drains.

The World War Two Type 24 pillbox described above is visible as an extant building on aerial photographs (S3)-(S4). The earliest consulted aerial photographs on which the pillbox is visible were taken in 1944, e.g. (S3). At this time, the pillbox was covered with a superstructure, camouflaging it as a shed. It is visible on later aerial photographs free of its disguise, e.g. (S4). On these it is clear that the polygonal structure stands on a concrete base which is similar in shape but slightly larger than the pillbox itself. The base has not been mapped by the NMP. The pillbox is also depicted as a structure by modern Ordnance Survey 1:2500 mapping.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 8 March 2006.
