Summary

Systematic fieldwalking of the western half of this field in 1998 and 2000 recovered a small number of potentially Mesolithic and Early Neolithic worked flints; a large number of Late Prehistoric worked flints (a mix of Late Neolithic/Bronze Age and Bronze Age or later pieces); a significant number of medieval pottery sherds; smaller quantities of Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon/medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery; medieval to post-medieval ceramic building material; post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments, gunflints and stone hone and undatable iron slag and lava quern fragments. Casual fieldwalking and metal-detecting of the whole field between 1988 and 2025 recovered a small number of Neolithic and undatable prehistoric worked flints (including a Neolithic polished flint axehead); Roman, Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds; a Roman coin; post-medieval jettons; additional lava quern fragments; medieval buckles; a medieval/post-medieval purse bar and copper alloy vessel fragments and a post-medieval button and lead powder measure.

Top gateway by the road and Bale Road field about 15 meters in from the corner:
1 undatable prehistoric sub-rectangular tertiary flint flake of chocolate brown flint with fine retouch on both edges and some ventral retouch at the distal edge.
