Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting in this area during between 1996 and 2025 recovered undatable prehistoric flint flakes; a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano-convex flint knife; an undated lava quern fragment; Roman, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval brick fragment; medieval and a range of other, Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Late Bronze Age tanged chisel; Roman brooches; a Roman to Middle Saxon pin; Early Saxon brooch fragments; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval thimble, key, harness pendant and lead seal matrix; a medieval/post-medieval candlestick, copper alloy sheet strainer or seive, copper alloy cooking vessel fragments and post-medieval crotal bells, a coin weight, rowel spur and harness mount.

Full Description

November 1996. Casual fieldwalking. [1].
Fragment of lava quern, near cropmark NHER 30870 at location [2].
In southeast corner found by digger driver during drain laying.
Rim early medieval unglazed jar (quite fresh).
General finds up to 1996:
Five Roman grey, one Thetford type bowl rim (weight 16g), eleven medieval unglazed, four Glazed Grimston, four post medieval pottery sherds.

Fragment of medieval brick, very hard fired, 42mm thick strike mark on one face, shaft impressions on other.

May 2001. Dalling East Moor. At location [5].
Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano convex knife. Sub triangular flake of dark brown flint with shallow invasive flaking along both converging sides. The blunt acute tip is abraded. The striking platform is plain and the bulb of percussion very prominent. Beaker period.
