Summary

An archaeological excavation uncovered a complex series of at least thirteen phases of occupation between the Late Saxon and medieval periods. Walls, floors, pits and post holes were recorded. Finds included imported pottery, fish bones and many fragments of coal. A 13th century wall was aligned with 'Row' 55 demonstrating that the layout of the town was established by this date. In the 14th century layers of natural sand with fewer features cut into them built up. The Great Plague of Yarmouth in 1349 may have caused this decrease in activity. Smaller scale activity continued in the 16th to 18th century and a 20th century cellar was recorded.
