Summary

A substantial earthwork terrace was identified here during a site visit in 1997. The placename ‘The Terrace’ appears nearby on historical Ordnance Survey maps. The earthwork was interpreted as a probable garden feature, associated with the former rectory which once stood to its west. Earthworks are visible here on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2018, but it is not clear to what extent these are natural rather than anthropogenic, or whether they were created specifically as part of a garden or were more a product of creating a level area for the former rectory and its garden. As the earthwork survey was flown relatively recently it is probable that the earthworks still survive.

Map

14 May 1997. Site visit to inspect earthwork (?Iron Age) reported by source.
Substantial terrace cut into hillside - name 'The Terrace' on Ordnance Survey - most probably a garden feature. The former rectory was just to the west, and a chalk-lined well still survives.
D. Gurney (NLA), 14 May 1997.

February 2026. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
Earthworks probably relating to the post medieval terrace described above are visible on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2018 (S1). They have been mapped by extent. It is not clear to what extent they are natural rather than anthropogenic. If they are humanly created it is also not clear whether this was done specifically as part of a garden or was more a product of creating a level area to build the former rectory describe above and lay out its garden. A building, presumably the former rectory, is depicted on the Tithe Map surrounded by what is probably a formal garden (S2, plot 249). As the earthwork survey was flown relatively recently it is probable that the earthworks still survive.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 3 February 2026.
