Full Description
1996. Metal detecting find.
Medieval silver personal seal matrix. Hexagonal with handle which has lost its suspension loop. On reverse the letters + GIBBE: on obverse a neatly drawn head of a tonsured male with legend around between dotted borders + CLE: [or CLER] HIS LOVE IS TREWE.
V. Fryer (NLA) 4 June 1997.
February to March 2000. Metal detecting.
Early Saxon head and bow from a fairly small cruciform brooch, (S1). One full-round knob survives, with a hemispherical top above a central waist. The head plate is curved, with the sides swept back; instead of a central panel and wings there is a central undecorated area with four bold grooves down either side (in this, it is reminiscent of a head stud brooch). There is a single pin bar lug on the reverse with lots of iron corrosion. The bow has a flat part top and bottom, the top one decorated with edge nicks and transverse grooves and the bottom broken. In between, the bow is facetted, with a flat-topped centre, and flares towards the centre before tapering again. Old break. 5th century.
POL. PHOT.
Identified by H.M. Geake (A&E)
