1996. Metal detecting.
Late Saxon Carolingians, Charles the Bold, class 2, 864 to 877 and later, denier, Saint Denis.
Obverse +CRATIIAD-[..](part of E)X (legend starts at Oh) - KAROLVS-monogram with retrograde S.
Reverse +(retrograde S)CIAI[..]VSIIM - cross.
Weight 1.26g (incomplete), die axis 9h, bouckled, broken.
MG 843, BMC 118-119, MEC I.897.

The degenerated features of this specimen (misspelling of GRATIA, retrograde Ss) are not necessarily a proof of a late
date - the mint output of GDRs was big, and there is a great variety within the issue.
Identified by J. C. Moesland (Fitzwilliam Museum).
W. Milligan (NCM), 14 October 1996.

1998. Metal detecting.
Medieval big chunky strap end book clasp of composite construction with outer plates around a forked spacer. The spacer ends in a transverse moulded ridge, then a solid terminal with a hole to fit over a peg on the book's cover, and an animal knop with another hole - perhaps for a cord to pull the clasp off the peg. The outer plates have shaped open ends and are undecorated; they have two copper alloy rivets. This composite construction is unusual and must imply that the book which held this clasp was very thick. Usually these clasps are hinged wehre this one has a moulded ridge, so are more flexible. Compare with (S1). 14th century.
Polaroid (S2) taken.
Identified by H. M. Geake (NCM), January 1999.
K. Sussams (NCM), 13 May 1999.
