Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 1997 and 2024 recovered a number of objects, including a Late Iron Age/Roman brooch; a Roman brooch; a Late Saxon stirrup mount; a medieval stirrup base and ewer spout and a medieval/post-medieval thimble.

October/November 1997. Metal detecting find.
Late Saxon stirrup angle mount, (S2). Iron on reverse. Hollow copper alloy mount on front in form of an animal head with zone of ribbing between two transverse ridges below. Animal head is Ringerike style with long oval ears partly obscured by scrolling S-shaped eyebrows. Nose has a pair of similar scrolling whiskers. 11th century.

December 1997/January 1998. Metal detecting finds. [1].
Large one-piece Colchester brooch, very corroded so that all of surface is lost. Nevertheless fairly complete, with forward-facing hook under which the surviving chord passes. Half the spring survives, corroded around a (non-functional) iron axis bar. Bow smoothly curves to a pointed foot, with catch-plate on reverse. Late Iron Age/early Roman. 1st century.
Late medieval/early post medieval thimble made by stamping and hammering straight rim decorated with single engraved line. Side covered with vertical rows of small circular indentations. Top partly covered with spiral of the same. The very tip is bare.

Medieval copper alloy ewer spout in the form of a dog. North Germanic of Flemmish in origin.
Handle cast separately to the body, this is why they often came apart.
