Summary

Site of a 19th-century garden to rear of The Nunnery (NHER 64882). It is shown on 19th-century Ordnance Survey maps with a lawn, mature trees, and a large greenhouse. This garden formed part of a circle of 19th century gardens surrounding the Mere.

Included in (S1) and described as important survival of private ornamental gardens that once ringed the Mere.
1838 formed two parallel gardens.
Combined before 1885.
Lawn with mature trees and large greenhouse, also smaller examples; probably a boat house too.
House since extended over garden and a terrace made.

Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new dwellings and parking area to rear of The Nunnery (14 Denmark Street), within part of the area once occupied by the formal garden.
It is recorded that no features associated with the original garden survived at the time these works commenced (with only the brick retaining wall of the later terrace noted).
