Summary

This was built on land owned by the crown in 1869 when the churchyards in town closed. Two identical chapels designed by Messrs Brown and Pierce (now recorded separately as NHER 65225) and a new well were constructed and an ornamental garden laid out. Seats for the cemetery were obtained from Coalbrookedale. In 1882 piped water was laid in and in 1892 the western entrance was made. The cemetery was extended to the north in 1912. Much of original planting survives and some oaks seem to remain from pre cemetery field boundaries. The cemetery is an important example of an ornamental cemetery.
