Full Description
Dereham Cemetery.
Listed by (S1) as grade two star and of regional importance.
Crown lands, purchased for cemetery in 1869 when churchyards in town closed. Buildings (now listed, see below) by Messrs Brown and Pierce, included a new well for the lodge. From 1880 the custodian was supplied with a lawnmower so that he could sell hay to defray costs. Seats obtained from Coalbrookedale. From 1907 the cemetery board reserved planting rights. North extension purchased from Quebec Estate 1912. In 1882 piped water laid in and in 1892 the western entrance was made. Much of original planting survives though some pines over mature; some oaks seem to remain from pre cemetery field boundaries. Important example of an ornamental cemetery.
See (S1).
E. Rose (NLA), 26 February 1998.
Two identical mortuary chapels were listed Grade II in 1999. These are now recorded separately as NHER 65225.
