Full Description
Listed in (S1) as Grade II site.
(S2) lists as grade three star (national importance).
Sea wall constructed 1927 to 1928. Water gardens begun as winter unemployment relief works. Planned as modelled on Venice with rockwork caves (!) by Councillor Docwra with gondolas plying through, the actual construction by Thompson was much simpler. Separate boating pool at north end. All constructed of Portland cement filled with sea water. 6639 tons of soil brought from Caister for planting. Five electric boats commissioned. Some later rockwork of reused building materials. North and south sections no longer connected.
See (S2) for details.
E. Rose (NLA), 26 February 1998.
