Summary

The New Cemetery was laid out in 1855 at the same time as the Old Cemetery (NHER 33471). It was not, however, opened until 1875 and 1896. Different parts of the cemetery were laid out for different faiths and two mortuary chapels were built within the grounds. It had a simpler plan than Old Cemetery although it has similar white brick walls and the same planting scheme.

Map

New Cemetery.
(S1) lists as grade two star (regional importance).
Despite name, ground laid out in 1855 at same time as Old Cemetery to south; however not opened until 1875 (Anglican, to south) and 1896 (nonconformist, to north). Much simpler plan than Old Cemetery. Two mortuary chapels; in 1901 it was proposed to demolish one to make room for a few more burials but this was not done and Caister cemetery was opened instead. Similar white brick walls to Old Cemetery and same planting around circle of three holm oaks with one deliberately
omitted; avenues of limes and euonymus (spindle tree).
See details in (S1).
