Full Description
Rectory listed grade II; gardens graded three-star (national importance) by Norfolk Historic Gardens Survey.
Building listed in (S1) as 18th century on older core, red brick and stucco, black glazed pantiles; rear elevations part flint. 2 storeys and attic, facade of 5 bays with advanced central bay; sash windows, string course. Central dormer, cornice and gable stacks. Doorcase on south facade, gabled rear wing.
(S2) states that 18th century records note that the 'stone' (flint?) parts of the house were built in 1698, the brick parts 1722-48. A moat around the house was drained in 1726. 3 acres of barns, courts and outhouses are mentioned, probably to north-west of house; in 1813 a garden house, laundry and wine cellar were noted. Part of Spout Hills taken into gardens in 1810, and in 1839 south boundary redrawn as sinuous to take in ancient pollards.
Barns and kitchen gardens extended 1832 and lake made to east from stream.
Grounds now contain sizeable trees and much Butchers Broom. Coniferous plantations now gone. Some pollard oaks surrounded by holly circles. Fruit wall survives in gardens. Pleasure grounds to east have many exotic species. East of lake are meadow areas.
See (S2) for full details.
E. Rose (NLA) 27 February 1998.
