Summary

Part of a late 19th century garden surrounding two houses. The garden has various serpentine designs in box hedging and a revolving summerhouse. Fronting Exton's Road is Dereham Cottage, a two storey double-fronted house of grey brick with a hipped slate roof. This plot was part of the Goodwin's Fields development, a mid-19th century attempt to create a garden suburb. A lack of interest from developers meant that many such plots were sold as pleasure gardens, and it is likely that the origins of this garden may be traced to that period.

The detached house of grey brick which stands at the centre of this garden is visible on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map so had been built before 1886. The house is double-fronted with canted bays and a porch between. It has a hipped slate roof. [1] thinks that the house is of Woolpit bricks.
This house was built in a plot laid out as part of the Goodwin's Fields development, a proposal which aimed to establish a garden suburb for some of the more affluent residents of Lynn. It appears that there was not sufficient interest from developers so Charles Goodwin was forced to lay out and sell many of the plots as gardens and pleasure grounds, planted up and provided with summerhouses for enjoyments as retreats, rather than as homes in which to live.
See (S2) for further information about the Goodwin's Fields development.
