Full Description
March 1998. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of former garage site (Trench 1):
A series of compacted mortar and silt floors similar to that recorded at NHER 1202. The nature of these floors suggests they were outbuildings or workshops rather than the main tenement building. Several pits were were recorded including some which were rich in organic remains including worked and unworked wood, and leather offcuts. Pottery from these pits indicated a 12th to 14th century date.
Medieval floors and pits were truncated by a brick cellar, probably from the 19th century and likely to have belonged to the inn which is marked at this location on the King's Lynn Town Plan (S1).
Post medieval silver coin, medieval pottery, shell, leatherworking debris found.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
See NHER 33518 and NHER 33519 for information on Trenches 2-3.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.456).
E. Rose (NLA), 29 May 1998. Amended by A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 9 May 2019 and P. Watkins (HES), 27 May 2019.
The timbers from the Three Tuns inn on this site were taken to 5 Chequers Street Grimston (NHER 50018), where they were used to rebuild the interior of the house. They are large with assembly numbers, but not strictly datable.
E. Rose (NLA), 4 April 2007.
