Summary

Earthworks, sub-surface features and pottery, identified during site visits and surveys, probably relate to a small medieval to post medieval settlement site. The earthworks are also visible on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. They define part of a rectilinear enclosure, probably a messuage boundary. As the lidar data was flown relatively recently (2017), it is probable that the earthworks still survive.

Map

Late April 1998.
Observation of foundation trenches for new house at south end of G315, overlapping slightly into G317, revealed an undated ditch almost parallel with, but slightly to northwest of back wall of new house, plus several other ?pits, undated. Heavy boulder clay subsoil. No pre 18th century finds.

Medieval and post medieval sherds (details to follow) in bare soils immediately southwest of east-west barn in G315. Substantial ditch aligned east-west and turning to north-south alignment in G314, forming north and west sides of a small enclosure, interior slightly raised, fronting on former common, Hey Green, in G320 to east.

February 1999. Earthwork Survey.
The ditched enclosure has been interpreted as the remnant of the boundary of a documented messuage.
See report (S2) for plan and further details. This survey is also noted in (S3).
B. Cushion (NLA) 24 February 1999. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 14 April 2015.

September 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The earthworks relating to the probable medieval to post medieval settlement site described above are visible on aerial photographs (S4) and visualised lidar data (S5). Their appearance on the visualised lidar data is closely similar to their depiction following the earlier ground-based earthwork survey described above. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is probable that the earthworks still survive.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 25 September 2023.
