Summary

The cropmarks of ring ditch or circular enclosure, possibly dating to a late prehistoric date, are visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs. This ring ditch is possibly the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow or a circular prehistoric enclosure. An internal feature is visible within the ring ditch, although it is not clear whether this is a later addition to the site.

The cropmarks of ring ditch or circular enclosure, possibly dating to a late prehistoric date, are visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1). This ring ditch is possibly the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow or a circular prehistoric enclosure. An internal feature is visible within the ring ditch, although it is not clear whether this is a later addition to the site. The ring ditch is extremely large and is located on just above the 45m contour on a spur of slightly higher ground. It may be the remains of a Bronze Age barrow, although its large size could indicate that it is an early example. It is also possible that it is a circular enclosure, rather than a barrow site, potentially late prehistoric in date. It is not clear whether the central enclosure is directly related to the ring ditch. It is possible that it is a later feature. It does not appear to be an excavation trench, which would be one possibility. Another suggestion is the site of a windmill, however, the mound seems too large for this purpose. The large ring ditch located at TF 6981 3556, maximum diameter of 52m. The width of the ditch varies from 1.1m to 3m. Within the centre of the ring ditch is a linear feature, which seems to be three sides of a rectangular enclosure, 25m long and 15m wide. The eastern side of this enclosure may continue further to the south, however, it was not mapped as it co-incides with geological striping which may be confusing the cropmarks. To the east is a linear feature runs E.W. from TF 6994 3555 to TF 6990 3556. It is 40m long and 1.5m wide.
S. Massey (NMP), 9 April 2002.
